        Family and Consumer Sciences Program

The West Virginia Extension Service translates West Virginia University's research and knowledge into action. Extension educators and staff in West Virginia's 55 counties address the needs of families and communities on a daily basis. Extension collaborates with many partners to assess needs and to meet those needs by helping people help themselves.

In Putnam County the family and consumer science program extension educator is Sally Summers, M.S., CFCS, LD. She holds the rank of associate professor and is tenured at West Virginia University. Teacher educated Sally is certified in family and consumer sciences from the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences and also holds a certification from the WV Board of Licensed Dietitians. A WV University extension educator for 32 years she has been in Putnam County for 20 years.

The overall objective of the family and consumer sciences program is to empower families to improve their overall well-being – physical, emotional, and social – through educational opportunities. The major thrust of the strengthening families initiative focuses on the areas of entrepreneurship, food safety, and chronic disease risk prevention.
